  1. My Year in San Francisco’s $2 Million Secret Society Startup - Motherboard

And a third one from the “things I read in 2016 about weird cultish American groups and didn’t bookmark at the time but have stuck with me” file.

  2. Fitness Isn’t a Lifestyle Anymore. Sometimes It’s a Cult | WIRED

I didn’t bookmark this when I read it but I’ve since mentioned it to 2 or 3 people, so. The November Project. (via @ph)

  3. San Francisco Scapegoated for Silicon Valley’s Civic Blind Spot

Very good point from Peter Merholz: The poor planning (ie, car-centric, sprawling) of Silicon Valley is one reason for the current problems in (more appealingly planned, dense) San Francisco. A good example of the need for regional rather than town planning, I’d guess.

  4. Arresting the Unjustly Homeless while they Learn to Code — Weird Future — Medium

Good stuff, on that well-intentioned but myopic vanity project to help a homeless man to code. Hey, why not use your energy to change the system? Even less chance of success and glory, but if enough of you do it you might just make a sodding difference you. Gah, angry.

  5. 1906 Earthquake Blended with Today | Shawn Clover

Lovely merging of photos of San Francisco from 1906 and today. (via New Aesthetic)

  6. The Participant Observer » Blog Archive » Cyborganic and the Birth of Networked Social Media (It’s here!)

PhD thesis from a couple of years ago, on Cyborganic and other things (like Wired/Hotwired) that its members were involved in.

  7. Final edition: Twilight of the American newspaper—By Richard Rodriguez (Harper’s Magazine)

Lovely article that is more a reminiscence of a lost San Francisco and childhood than it is another “we must save newspapers” plea.

  8. Emptyage : Are You Going to San Francisco

How to make the most of living in SF. Wouldn’t that be very lovely? Anyway, I think these could probably be generalised as to how to enjoy any city. (via Kottke)

  9. The Official Star Wars Blog » I Left My Star Destroyer in San Francisco

I saw this linked to everywhere and didn’t watch it. Just more Star Wars stuff. But I finally succumbed and it’s *very* good. I love that the footage is so casual and amateur.

  10. 493. South Park, San Francisco.

South Park around 1860 or 1870. One of many great old photos on this University of California site.

  11. EO Newsroom: New Images - San Francisco Skyline

Fantastic aerial photo, especially if you view the full image. Not that I’m envious of so many people I know moving there or anything, oh no. (via Pulse Laser)

  12. Peterme.com: Going Back To South Park, Gonna Have Myself A Time

I have fond memories of staying in the Wired corporate flat on San Francisco’s South Park for a week in 1996.

  13. Sony Bravia - The Advert

I know it’s been everywhere. But it’s still one of the most beautiful things ever, even if it is an advert.
