  1. On Edward Hopper by Mark Strand | The New York Review of Books

I particularly like the first half, on Hopper’s preparatory drawings. “It was not that he needed to be sure how to paint a sugar dispenser or salt shaker as in Nighthawks (1942), but that they should become his.”

  2. ‘The Matt Ward Manoeuvre’ Part 2: Techniques and tips… exercises in drawing

A nice post about doing a sketch of a new typeface every day.

  4. Matthew Diffee

I liked the drawing in a ‘New Yorker’ cartoon of this chap’s, Googled him, and lots of his other cartoons are funny too. Nice.

  5. Free Andrew Loomis Art Intstruction Downloads « Escape From Illustration Island

Some lovely old copyright-free books on figure drawing as PDFs. (via Ministry of Type)

  6. LRB · Bridget Riley: At the End of My Pencil

Bridget Riley on why she draws and how her paintings developed. Good, although it all sounds more straighforward than I imagine it was.

  7. Urban Sketchers

I’m very much enjoying this so far. A group weblog from dozens of sketching people in cities around the world. Some inspiring stuff.

  8. Alexandre Day

I like these drawings. Verge slightly on the too twee, with those winsome eyes, but I love the marks. (via Drawn!)

  9. Ironic Sans: The Other Art of Courtroom Sketch Artists

What the people who do the drawings of court proceedings draw/paint when not in court. I like Patrick Flynn’s court work there. (via Drawn!)

Splendid piece by Jack Schulze on how they came up with ideas for the form of their exciting-sounding digital radio prototype for the BBC.

  11. The Fate of the Artist - Alan Moore’s London

Eddie Campbell on the photographic references he used to draw ‘From Hell’. (via Rodcorp)

Some gorgeous life drawings on this illustrator’s weblog. (via Drawn.ca)

  14. Drawn! The Illustration Blog
