I think that’s one of the concrete boats that were used during World War II to block the backwaters from invading Germans. I’m not sure why they’re still around or if they’re positioned in particular places on purpose.

Wow, that’s wonderfully 1980s.
How come the 1980s seemed so new and modern back then, and now they look really quaint? It can’t be that we’re getting old; there must be another explanation…
I went to a talk by one of the guys who did the new signage for the place. He said that the plan with the lights was that they could be set to different colours to create different atmospheres for different events.
Unfortunately the Barbican staff seem to have taken a liking to using all the colours at once, which is, as you suggest, less than attractive.
