‘Rip It Up And Start Again’ playlist

I recently read Simon Reynolds’ brilliant book Rip It Up And Start Again, about post-punk and what came next (mostly what he calls New Pop). I learned about artists that hadn’t registered with me before, and saw others (mostly 1980s pop) in a new light. I’ve put together a 14 hour, 207 track Spotify playlist.

There are other fine playlists based on this book available (82 tracks, 64 tracks, 44 tracks) but I wanted a playlist that I could have listened along to while reading the book.

So my playlist is in order that the songs are mentioned in the book. I’ve included every track that is described in a sentence or more (so not if it’s only mentioned by name, in passing). I’ve tried to balance that completist attitude by not swamping the playlist with too much of one artist or one album at a time.

The track listing below is split into chapters and also includes the tracks I couldn’t find on Spotify. The book isn’t chronological — each chapter is about a particular scene or idea — but this makes for a better playlist as groups of songs go well together.

Anyway, if you’re on Spotify, and have 14 hours to fill, listen away!

  • 09:00am: About my 14 hour Post-Punk and New Pop Spotify playlist from @SimonRetromania’s ‘Rip It Up And Start Again’: http://t.co/FS8xt75K
  • 09:12am: @topfife I’ve only just made that playlist! But I was pleased how much was on Spotify. Not too many gaps for this one.
  • 10:03am: @mattsheret Yeah, but I’d expect any book on a genre to treat it as really important and exciting.
  • 10:10am: @mattsheret Fair enough. I didn’t notice, but maybe I was being very uncritical :)
  • 12:03pm: @mattsheret I was but a note-taking and track-adding machine in the process, but thank you!
  • 12:04pm: @mattsheret I wish there were more points where influences on the artists were discussed. I like the couple of times odd old tracks crop up.
  • 12:31pm: @tabbytarling The kind of jolting, sentimental photo from the past that would only fall out of a book in a movie :)
  • 12:31pm: @tabbytarling (And, hello, how are you!?)
  • 01:23pm: @wonderlandblog Why do you think Mac users have bigger screens than other users? Genuine question, wondering if there are stats.
  • 02:24pm: @wonderlandblog Ahh, I keep seeing more and more friends on tiny MacBook Airs. You can’t carry as many cups of tea on an Air though.
  • 03:49pm: @mattsheret Yes, amazing how well they stand up. I also wish I found them before a couple of years ago. Many years listening to make up for!
  • 03:52pm: @mattsheret Did you see them on Later? I was worried - old guys doing old hits - but thought they carried it off well http://t.co/SxEMyaTm
  • 03:58pm: @psd @mattsheret Wire? They’re a bit like Elastica aren’t they? (I know, I know, I just came to those two the wrong way round.)
  • 09:26pm: @tobybarnes Wait, what?! Am I a Victorian woman? This explains a few things…
  • 10:37pm: @maxgadney I’m your first follower! Do I get a prize? Maybe some free data?
