Witham Park book coverWitham Park: 100 Years Old by Janet Gyford
Description Contents Surnames

This book celebrates the centenary of the opening of Witham's Maldon Road Park to the public. Many of the town's residents will recognise themselves or their friends in one or other of the fifty photos. Some of these depict placid scenes under the trees, whilst others show hectic events like the Donkey derbies and the Mayfest. The stories told in the text are many and varied. For instance, there was a historic visit from an Australian aboriginal cricket team. There were bitter arguments about whether a public recreation ground was really necessary at all. And there were the new oak trees planted in 1946 by personnel from Rivenhall airfield.
